Why "Oh Speak Méthode" works better than grammar drills for expats learning French.

You've done the work. Years of French classes, a stack of grammar workbooks, maybe even a diploma.

And yet in a meeting, at your kid's school gate,... the words just won't come out.

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. It's one of the most common frustrations I hear from expats living in France, Belgium, and Luxembourg: strong grammar, weak confidence. And it's not a "you" problem. It's a method problem.

The grammar trap

Most language classes are built backwards. You're taught rules first, vocabulary second, and speaking... eventually, maybe, if there's time. The assumption is that once you know the language well enough, speaking will follow naturally.

It doesn't.

Grammar knowledge lives in one part of your brain. Spontaneous speech lives in another. You can have perfect theoretical knowledge of French and still freeze when a real person asks you a real question in real time because your brain has never practiced turning knowledge into speech under pressure.

This is why so many expats get stuck at the same frustrating plateau (around B1) : understanding everything, saying almost nothing.

What "Oh Speak Méthode" does differently?

The Oh Speak Méthode flips the traditional order. Instead of studying the language and hoping speaking will follow, you start by speaking messy, imperfect, real-time speaking and build accuracy from there.

Here's why that works so well:

1. It trains the actual skill you need. Speaking is a physical and cognitive skill, not just a knowledge base. Like riding a bike, you build it through repetition and real attempts, not by reading about balance. Oh Speak Méthode puts you in low-stakes speaking situations immediately, so your brain gets the reps it actually needs.

2. It kills the fear of mistakes. Perfectionism is often the real blocker, not vocabulary. When every class is built around a "no judgment, just talk" atmosphere, that fear loses its grip fast. You stop mentally translating and rehearsing sentences before you say them and start just... talking.

3. It builds real-world reflexes. Conversations don't wait for you to find the perfect word. Oh Speak Méthode trains you to keep going, rephrase, use what you know, and stay in the flow of a real exchange, exactly what you need at the pharmacy, in a work meeting, or chatting with your neighbor.

4. It makes progress visible fast. Because you're speaking from lesson one, you feel the improvement instead of just accumulating grammar rules you're not sure how to use. That feeling of "I can actually do this" is what keeps people motivated long enough to make real progress.

Why this matters especially for expat life

Living in France, Belgium, or Luxembourg means the language isn't an academic subject but it's your daily life. It's the difference between managing your paperwork with confidence or dreading every phone call. Between chatting easily with other parents or standing on the sidelines. Between feeling integrated or feeling permanently like a guest.

Grammar mastery doesn't fix that feeling. Speaking practice does.

Oh Speak Méthode

I'm Samantha — a language teacher and an expat myself, based in Malta. I built the Oh Speak Méthode because I watched too many capable, intelligent expats stay stuck in silence, not because they didn't know the language, but because no one ever gave them a space to actually practice speaking it out loud, without fear of getting it wrong.

That's exactly what our online French conversation classes and 1:1 classes are for: a warm, encouraging space where speaking comes first, mistakes are expected, and progress is fast because you're finally training the right skill.

If you've been "meaning to get better" at speaking for a while now, this is your sign. Try a conversation class and feel the difference for yourself sometimes one real conversation teaches you more than a month of grammar review.
